What is answer engine optimization (AEO)? A plain-English definition with examples
Answer engine optimisation is the work of being named, recommended or cited when a buyer asks an AI assistant a question. What the label means, where the definitions disagree, and which checklist items have evidence behind them.
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the work of getting a business named, recommended or cited when a buyer asks an AI assistant a question about its category. The assistants include ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. There is no standards body behind the term, no agreed definition, and — despite what the conference talks imply — no separate discipline underneath it. What makes the label useful is narrower: it points at a measurable outcome. When the question is asked cold, with your name nowhere in it, does the answer include you, and is what it says about you true?
Three definitions, three commercial interests
Google's AI optimisation guide is the plainest starting point. It names AEO and GEO and folds both into ordinary SEO: "From Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO" (https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide, accessed 2026-10-27).
Vendors split. Profound publishes a page titled "AEO vs. GEO: Why they're the same thing (and why we prefer AEO)" (https://www.tryprofound.com/blog/aeo-vs-geo, accessed 2026-10-27). Semrush publishes both an AEO guide and an AEO vs SEO comparison (https://www.semrush.com/blog/answer-engine-optimization/ and https://www.semrush.com/blog/aeo-vs-seo/, accessed 2026-10-27).
So the honest answer to "is AEO the same as GEO, or as SEO?" is: it depends who is selling. The only definition we could find with a peer-reviewed paper behind it is GEO — generative engine optimisation, defined and benchmarked by Aggarwal et al. (https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735, accessed 2026-10-27). We could not find an equivalent paper for AEO. That does not make the term useless. It makes it a marketing label, and a marketing label should be checked against the work it describes.
What AEO is not
It is not a separate index. Google's guide describes its AI features as grounded in the same core Search ranking and quality systems, not a second index that needs its own submission.
It is not a placement you buy. Nobody can sell you a guaranteed slot in an answer that has not been generated yet, and any vendor who says otherwise is describing a sales process rather than a method.
It is not a switch. There is no file, tag or keyword that turns it on. What exists is a set of ordinary conditions: a page that can be crawled, facts that can be parsed, and enough corroboration elsewhere that the model has a reason to name you.
The standard checklist: what has evidence, what is folklore
Most AEO advice arrives as a list. Here is the same list with an evidence status attached to each line.
| Advice | What we could verify | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Be crawlable and indexable | Google's documentation on AI features says there are no additional requirements beyond being indexable and eligible for a snippet. OpenAI documents that OAI-SearchBot — the crawler that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search results — honours robots.txt, so opting out removes you from search answers. | Prerequisite |
| State facts plainly: prices, hours, services, areas served | In our published sample (a real client run, pseudonymised), 14 of the 333 claims the answers made about a market-leading business were wrong — about its identity, location, services and prices. | Lever |
| Add statistics, quotations and cited sources to pages | The GEO benchmark found a 30–40% visibility lift, for top-five sources, in English, in one experiment that has not been replicated. | Worth testing, not a promise |
| FAQ blocks and schema markup | Google's guide lists over-focusing on structured data among the things you do not need for AI features. We found no published evidence that FAQ markup alone earns citations. | Hygiene, not a lever |
| An llms.txt file | Google's guide lists special AI files among the things you do not need, and its AI features do not read them. | Hygiene |
| "AI keywords", content chunking, mass publishing | Google's guide explicitly debunks chunking and AI-specific rewriting. We found no evidence for the rest. | Skip |
Practitioners notice the gap between the list and the evidence. A thread on r/RankForAI opens "I think too many people are overcomplicating AEO" (https://www.reddit.com/r/RankForAI/comments/1v2houh/i_think_too_many_people_are_overcomplicating_aeo/, accessed 2026-10-27). The complaint is fair: most of the list is ordinary web hygiene wearing a new acronym.
What "being the answer" actually looks like
Three outcomes get flattened into the word "mentioned", and they are not equivalent:
- Recommended. The answer puts your business forward as the pick.
- Mentioned. Your name appears in the list while someone else gets the recommendation.
- Cited. A link to your page appears in the answer, with or without a recommendation.
They come apart. A business can be named in most answers and still be described with the wrong opening hours. It can be the most-named business in its market and still carry wrong facts. In our published sample — a real client run, pseudonymised — the business was named in 22 of the 75 unbranded asks and ranked first among 168 candidate businesses, and 14 of the 333 claims made about it were still wrong (the full report is public). Being in the answer is one problem. Being right in the answer is another.
That is also why a single screenshot proves nothing. Answers vary between runs, between engines and between months. A check that reports only "AI mentioned us" hides two of the three outcomes above.
The first step for a one-location business
Do not start with schema or a content calendar. Start with a measurement.
- Find out what the assistants say now. The free check reads your site and shows you the buyer questions a full measurement would ask. It takes about a minute and costs nothing.
- Fix the facts they get wrong. A wrong price, a service you no longer offer, hours that contradict your Google listing. This is the cheapest work with the clearest evidence behind it.
- Give the machines something accurate to cite. One page per service, stating what it is, where you do it, what it costs and when you are open. Name things the way buyers say them.
- Re-measure. Our report is one measurement — 30 real buyer questions across five live AI surfaces (176 graded answers, 302 API calls) for $4.99 once (pricing). A second measurement later is another $4.99. There is no subscription, and no re-measure is included.
If you want the wider picture first, what GEO means covers how these answers are built, and GEO audit vs SEO audit explains why the two documents are not rivals; for the labels themselves, see AEO vs GEO vs SEO. For the llms.txt question specifically, we wrote a separate guide. Our scoring rule and its limitations are published in full on the method page.
Common questions
What is answer engine optimization in one sentence? Answer engine optimisation is the work of getting your business named, recommended or cited when someone asks an AI assistant a question about your category.
Is AEO the same as GEO? In practice, mostly: vendors use both labels for the same work, and the vendor most associated with AEO says so on its own comparison page.
Does schema markup or an FAQ block make AI cite my site? No published evidence shows that it does, and Google's own AI guidance says its features need no special markup beyond ordinary crawlable, snippet-eligible pages.
What is the first AEO step for a small business? Measure what the assistants already say about you, then fix the facts they get wrong, before writing anything new.
Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my business? No. Answers vary between runs, and a vendor who promises placement is describing a sales process, not a method.
