What a brand mention in AI costs: placement fees, monitoring tools, and what the price actually includes

Four different products get sold as "a brand mention in AI" — placement, PR and syndication, monitoring tools, and a one-off measurement. Here is what each one costs, what you receive, and which parts you can actually verify afterwards.

Ask what a brand mention in AI costs and you will get four different answers, because four different products hide behind the phrase. One is sold per deal, two by the month, one per report. Only some of them leave you with something you can check once the invoice is paid.

Here is each path, the published price where we could find one, and the part of the pitch worth questioning.

The four things on sale

1. Placement inside an answer. Someone offers to get your business named when a buyer asks an assistant about your category. No published rate card is quoted here, because we could not verify one — which is itself part of the problem: you are buying an outcome that does not exist yet and cannot be repeated on demand.

2. PR and syndication. Get mentioned on the pages assistants read — trade press, local news, directories, review sites. Billed per release or on a retainer. The unit of purchase is a mention on a page, not a mention in an answer.

3. Monitoring tools. Software that watches mentions over time. Sold by the month, usually per brand, per engine and per prompt.

4. A one-off measurement. A report: the questions asked, the answers recorded, each one graded. Sold per report.

The confusion in this market is almost always between 1 and 4. They look like the same purchase ("make AI talk about me") and are not. One sells a hope; the other sells a record.

What the monitoring shelf actually charges

Vendor prices below were read from their own pricing pages on 7 October 2026, in US dollars, before tax. Tiers move; check before you buy.

Tool Entry point Mid tier Top tier
Otterly.ai Lite $29/month ($25 billed annually) Standard $189/month Premium $489/month
Semrush (SEO + AI Search) $165/month billed annually ($199 monthly) — —
Ahrefs Brand Radar AI Visibility Index from $50/month Prompt-level tracking $199/month All-models $699/month
Peec AI Quoted on a call €90–€499/month in third-party listings —

Two details decide the real total. Otterly charges engines as add-ons — Google AI Mode, Gemini and Claude cost $9–$149 a month each, depending on the tier — so the headline plan may not include the surface you care about most. And Ahrefs' $199 tier is metered at 83 prompts a day and 2,500 checks a month, which is a different unit from a brand seat. The full comparison, with what each tool watches and misses, stays on one page.

The shape of the shelf matters more than any single price: every product on it is a cadence product. A subscription sells you the next measurement. It never sells you the first one.

What a one-off measurement costs

Our price check in September 2026 found one-time reports from $29 to $499, human-delivered audits from $99 to $4,500, deep multi-market work up to $10,000, subscription dashboards at $29–$399 a month (tier re-checked on 28 October 2026) and agency retainers at $1,000–$5,000 a month. The full ladder, tier by tier, has the detail.

Our own report is $4.99 once: 30 real buyer questions across five live AI surfaces (176 graded answers, 302 API calls), delivered as a PDF plus a private link, with no subscription attached. A second measurement, later, is another $4.99.

Why buying a mention and buying a measurement carry different risk

An AI answer is assembled when it is asked. Put the same question three times and you can get three different answers — which is why our own method puts your three key questions to the assistants three times each and labels how stable each finding was. A promise that your business will be named in a future answer is a promise about a process nobody fully controls; treat it as a warning sign rather than a feature.

A measurement differs in one practical way: it produces an artefact. The questions are published, the answers are recorded verbatim, and the grading rule is frozen. You can re-read it a year later, hand it to someone else, and run it again under the same conditions to see what changed. That is what you pay for at any price above zero — not a verdict, a record.

The number that shows what the market thinks the phrase is worth

DataForSEO Labs, US market and English language, pulled on 27 October 2026: "brand monitoring tools" carries 210 searches a month, a keyword difficulty of 27, and an estimated paid-search cost per click of $103.21. Advertisers do not pay a hundred dollars a click for a phrase they think is cheap. That tells you the category is commercially serious. It does not tell you what a mention is worth to your business — for that you need your own baseline, not a market average.

What to buy first if you run one location

The sequence that costs least and answers most:

  1. Run the free technical check. It tells you whether assistants can read your site at all, and shows the questions a full measurement would ask.
  2. Buy one measurement. At $4.99 it costs less than one month of the cheapest tool on the shelf above, and it gives you the baseline a subscription would otherwise watch without a reference point.
  3. Fix what it found — a wrong price, a service you no longer offer, a page that contradicts itself.
  4. Re-measure. Only now does a monthly monitor have something to compare against, and only now is a PR campaign testable.

If a subscription is the first thing you buy, you are paying monthly to watch a baseline you never established.

What this page cannot price

  • Placement inside AI answers. Negotiated privately. We could not verify a published rate card to link, so this page gives no range rather than an invented one.
  • PR retainers. Quoted per market, outlet and scope.
  • Tax. Some vendors quote before VAT or GST, some after. Two quotes that look identical can differ substantially once tax is added.
