In Google's Map Pack but invisible in AI Overviews? Why the two rankings differ

Ranking in the local Map Pack no longer means AI Overviews name you. Why the two systems pick different sources — and how to check which one you're missing.

The short version: the Map Pack and AI Overviews are two different systems reading different sources. In our published measurement of a real Nashville med spa, the clinic was the most-named business in its market — and was still cited in only 4 of its 12 AI Overviews, and 0 of its 25 AI Mode answers. Ranking on the map no longer guarantees ranking in the answer.

Why they disagree

  • The Map Pack ranks you by your Google Business Profile: distance, prominence, review volume and rating signals.
  • AI Overviews assemble an answer from the sources they trust for the question — map listings, then competing clinics' own pages, then the review and directory sites the answers lean on. Being well-ranked on the map gets you considered; being cited requires the answer's other sources to know you too.

The three-part check

  1. Map Pack: for your 3–5 money questions, are you in the pack from the buyer's neighborhoods, not just your own block?
  2. AI Overviews: do the overviews for those questions appear at all — and when they do, whose pages do they quote?
  3. The gap: businesses in your pack that ARE cited appear on the sources the overview reads. That list is your work queue.

What moved the needle for the measured clinic

Claiming the profile was step zero. The list that mattered was the set of sites each answer was actually built from — which is exactly what our report prints per question. Read the sample to see the format.
