Google AI Overviews for local businesses: how answers get built, and where you come in

What Google AI Overviews actually read when a local buyer asks, why the map pack is not the same thing, and the checks that decide whether you appear.

When someone asks Google about a local service, the AI Overview above the results is assembled from pages Google could read at that moment. For a local business, four checks decide whether you are in that assembly — and none of them is your homepage design.

What the AI answer is built from

In one measured local market (a Nashville med spa, full report published), Google AI Overviews appeared on 12 of 25 buyer questions. The most-cited source feeding those answers was Google's own map listings, followed by competing clinics' own pages and the review and directory sites the answers leaned on. One competitor's own service pages appeared again and again.

None of those pages belonged to the measured business. It was cited 4 times across those 12 AI Overviews. The pattern is common: the AI answer about your category is assembled from map listings, your competitors' own pages and third-party directories long before it reaches yours.

The map pack is not the AI answer

Businesses treat "the map pack" as the whole game. It matters, but an AI Overview and the map pack are built by different machinery and can disagree. You need both to agree, and they are checked separately.

The four checks that decide whether you appear

1. Your Google Business Profile is complete. Category set precisely (not "consultant"), services named, hours current, photos real. The profile is the single record most local AI answers are assembled from — an empty field is a reason to skip you.

2. Your name, address and phone agree everywhere. The directory listing, the footer of your site, your social pages. Assistants cross-check identity across platforms; contradictions read as a business that cannot be confirmed.

3. Reviews name what you do. "Great place" carries nothing. A review that says "came in for Botox, loved the result" is evidence of a specific service an assistant can quote. Asking satisfied customers to name the service is the cheapest visibility work there is.

4. You exist where the answers are built. Look at the directories and list pages that already show up for your category and make sure you are on them — a listing you can submit yourself is usually free and takes ten minutes. For editorial "best of" lists, find out who maintains them and ask what it takes to be considered.

Then verify, don't assume

Every one of these is checkable, and the check is worth repeating after you fix things: local answers shift with the map pack, the season, and Google's own changes. Our measurement re-asks your key questions from several points around your address on every run — the method is published, the free check takes a minute, and a full local report shows you what the output looks like before you pay anything.

What does AI say about your business?

The free check reads your site and shows you the exact questions we would ask — before you enter any card details. The full report is $4.99 once.
