Why isn't my site cited by Perplexity? A diagnostic checklist (and what it won't tell you)
Perplexity cites pages it fetched for that particular answer, not pages that rank well. Five things worth checking, the citation quirks to know, and the one thing our own product cannot measure.
If Perplexity never cites your site, the useful question is not "how do I rank higher". Perplexity is not showing a ranked list that your site is losing on. It is assembling an answer and attaching numbered sources to the sentences those sources support. Your page is either one of the pages it fetched for that question, or it is not in the running at all. Those are different problems, and they need different checks.
Here is the checklist we would run — followed by the part most guides leave out: what a citation does and does not prove, and what we ourselves cannot measure.
What a Perplexity citation is
A Perplexity answer ends with numbered links. Each one marks a source the system used for that answer. Perplexity's own documentation describes PerplexityBot as the crawler that surfaces and links websites in search results, and says it is not used to crawl content for foundation models (https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers, accessed 2026-10-27).
Two consequences follow. First, a citation is evidence that a page was used, not an endorsement of the business. Second, the citation is chosen for that answer, at that moment, from the pages the system retrieved — not from a global ranking that you can inspect and climb.
The citation can be wrong
This is the part owners miss. A citation link is not a fact-check. An audit covered on Hacker News found that a third of Perplexity's citations did not contain the number they were cited for (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49536201, accessed 2026-10-27; the underlying report is at https://hausresearch.com/reports/perplexity-citation-audit/, accessed 2026-10-27). The headline is stark, and the practical lesson is narrower: when you check whether Perplexity describes your business correctly, read the sentence next to the link, not just the link.
So "Perplexity cited us" can mean three different things: it quoted us accurately, it paraphrased us loosely, or it attached our link to a claim we never made. Only the first is good news.
Ranking is not the mechanism
A community analysis posted on r/AISEOforBeginners claims that only 17% of AI citations come from pages ranking on page one (https://www.reddit.com/r/AISEOforBeginners/comments/1uk6xke/only_17_of_ai_citations_come_from_page_one/, accessed 2026-10-27). It is one poster's analysis, not a peer-reviewed rate, so do not treat the number as a law. The mechanism it describes is consistent with how these systems work: the citation is chosen per answer from retrieved pages, and a strong rank in a different system is not the same retrieval path.
For a sense of scale, Peec publishes benchmark work built from over a million AI citations (https://peec.ai/blog/citation-rate-benckmarks-from-over-1-million-citations, accessed 2026-10-27). Benchmarks are useful for asking better questions, not for setting a target: the denominators differ by platform, by question set and by whether you count citations per answer or per domain. A vendor analysis of citation patterns across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity makes the same point: each platform sources information differently (https://www.tryprofound.com/blog/ai-platform-citation-patterns, accessed 2026-10-27).
The five checks
1. Is PerplexityBot allowed? Perplexity's documentation says the search crawler follows robots.txt, and that changes can take up to 24 hours to apply. If you block it, you are out of the pool of pages it can surface in search results. Check your robots.txt for a rule that blocks it, including rules inherited from a template you did not write.
2. Can the page be read without JavaScript? Turn JavaScript off and reload. If your services, prices and hours vanish, a crawler that reads HTML never saw them. This is the same failure that removes pages from Google's AI features, and it is usually invisible on the rendered page.
3. Does the page answer the exact question in its first sentence? A practitioner post on r/AIquoted describes rewriting an FAQ page and watching it start getting cited (https://www.reddit.com/r/AIquoted/comments/1umad1p/i_rewrote_our_faq_to_get_cited_by_perplexity/, accessed 2026-10-27). It is one person's before-and-after with no control group, so treat it as a hypothesis. It is also the cheapest hypothesis to test: put the buyer's question in the heading, answer it completely underneath, and skip the three-paragraph preamble.
4. Is the fact corroborated somewhere other than your own site? Directories, review sites, map listings, trade press, partner pages. In the local market we measured, the answers leaned on map listings and other businesses' pages before the measured business's own site (how those answers get built). If every mention of your opening hours exists only on your homepage, the model has one claim and no confirmation.
5. Did you ask more than once? Ask the same question on three separate occasions and write down whether a source link appears and which sources it points to. One run is an anecdote. Our method asks each key question three times and counts only three hits out of three as stable (how we measure).
There is one more wrinkle worth knowing. Perplexity documents a second fetcher, Perplexity-User, used when a user asks a question; because the fetch is user-initiated, the documentation says it generally ignores robots.txt. So blocking PerplexityBot removes you from the search pool, but it does not guarantee invisibility when a user pastes a question — and allowing it does not guarantee a citation either.
What this checklist won't tell you
It will not give you a rate, a cause, or a timeline. It will not tell you why a model preferred one page over another, because that reasoning is not visible from outside. And it will not tell you what Perplexity will do next month: the retrieval and the answers change.
One boundary belongs to us, stated plainly: SeeWAIS does not measure Perplexity. Our reports cover five surfaces — ChatGPT (searching the web), Gemini (searching the web), Claude (from memory), Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode — and no more (method). We are not going to imply otherwise to sell a report. The diagnostic logic above still applies to Perplexity, because it is the same shape of problem: crawler access, readable pages, a direct answer, corroboration, repeats.
If you want a measured baseline on the surfaces we do cover, the free check shows you the exact buyer questions first, and the full report is $4.99 once: 30 real buyer questions across five live AI surfaces, 176 graded answers, 302 API calls (pricing). You can read a complete real report before spending anything.

Common questions
Why does Perplexity cite other sites but not mine? Usually one of five reasons: the search crawler is blocked, the page is unreadable without JavaScript, the answer drew on a different source, another page answered the question better, or the run simply varied.
Does ranking first on Google get my page cited by Perplexity? No: citations are chosen per answer from the pages Perplexity fetched, and one community analysis put only 17% of AI citations on pages ranking in the top ten.
Can Perplexity cite a page its crawler is blocked from? Yes, in one case: Perplexity documents a separate user-initiated fetcher that generally ignores robots.txt, distinct from the search crawler that respects it.
Does a Perplexity citation mean the answer is correct? Not necessarily: one published audit found that a third of Perplexity citations did not contain the number they were cited for.
Does SeeWAIS measure Perplexity? No: our reports cover five surfaces — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode — and do not include Perplexity.
